Boat distribution program
In the riverine regions of Bangladesh, particularly the southern areas, communities face extreme challenges due to river erosion, climate change, and other environmental conditions. Many residents in these areas are fishermen who rely heavily on boats to earn their livelihood. Unfortunately, most of them are forced to depend on Mahajans (moneylenders) to rent boats, paying exorbitant interest rates. As a result, nearly 80% of their income is consumed by loan repayments, leaving little for their families.
To break this cycle of exploitation and provide sustainable alternatives, Bicharan Kallyan Sangstha has initiated a Boat Distribution Program. This program provides boats directly to the fishermen, freeing them from the oppressive control of the Mahajans and significantly improving their livelihoods.
So far, Bicharan has distributed 10 boats, benefiting over 1,000 individuals in these vulnerable communities. This initiative not only empowers fishermen to secure their income but also strengthens the economic resilience of their families and communities.
