Livelihood Program
Bicharan Kallyan Sangstha is dedicated to enhancing the livelihoods of communities throughout Bangladesh, with a particular focus on vulnerable riverine regions. These areas face significant challenges, including river erosion, climate change, and environmental degradation. Many fishermen, reliant on boats for their livelihood, often struggle with debt due to high rental costs from moneylenders (Mahajans).
Agriculture, which contributes 12% to Bangladesh’s GDP and employs 65% of the rural population, has been severely impacted by climate change, resulting in landlessness for many farmers who are forced to live on khas land (government-owned land). In response to these pressing issues, Bicharan has implemented a Livestock Distribution Program, providing livestock to vulnerable populations and creating sustainable sources of income.
In urban areas, rickshaws and vans serve as essential transportation modes for economically disadvantaged individuals. With low financial barriers—being exempt from income tax and formal registration—these vehicles represent accessible livelihood options.
Additionally, recognizing the traditional sewing skills of women and the growing demand in the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry, where approximately 80% of workers are female, Bicharan has launched initiatives to empower these women. By distributing sewing machines and providing training in market networking, we equip them for self-employment, fostering economic independence and enhancing gender equality.
Through these strategic livelihood initiatives, Bicharan Kallyan Sangstha supports 1,680 individuals, creating sustainable economic opportunities and strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities across Bangladesh for a brighter future.
